The Right to Know Gentically

Engineered Food Act

This Act will require food manufacturers to identify

genetically engineered ingredients on the labels of foods

sold in California.

When California voters pass this ballot initiative,

the Label Genetically Engineered Food Act will also not

allow the common practice of mislabeling genetically

engineered foods as “natural” or “all natural.”

It’s imperative to understand why this initiative is so

important and how it can affect all Americans,

regardless of where you live.

California has the eighth largest economy in the world,

so passing a labeling law for genetically engineered

foods in California can have the same impact as passing

a federal law.

Large food companies are unlikely to accept having

dual labeling; one for California and another for the

rest of the country. It would be an expensive logistical

nightmare, not to mention a massive PR problem.

To avoid the dual labeling, many would likely opt to not

include using any genetically engineered ingredients in

their product, especially if the new label would be the

equivalent of a skull and crossbones.

Those who opt not to replace GE ingredients from the

get-go will likely find themselves unable to sell their

products, as a majority of consumers reportedly will

not buy foods once they know they’re genetically engineered.

Unable to sell their products, such companies will eventually

be forced to stop contaminating our food with genetically

engineered ingredients, or risk going out of business.

This is what happened in Europe and over 40 countries

around the world. It can happen in the U.S. This is why

we can’t leave California to battle the biotech giants on

their own. They need your help! Donating funds to this

campaign may be the best money you’ll spend all year

to safeguard your health, and the health of your children.

The Coalition Against the Costly Labeling Law,

outspent the pro-labeling group 30-1, and successfully

defeated the labeling initiative by scaring voters into

believing that labeling genetically engineered foods was

unnecessary and would raise food prices.

They did it again in Washington state last month, where

campaign contributions to three of the eight politicians

on the Senate Agriculture Committee—Democrat Brian

Hatfield, and Republicans Jim Honeyford and Mark Schoesler—

guaranteed the bill’s demise in committee. Right now,

the biotech industry is also working to defeat similar

GE labeling bills in Vermont, Hawaii, Connecticut,

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

and other states. According to the Union of Concerned

Scientists, Monsanto spent $8 million on their lobbying

efforts in 2010 alone, and gave more than $400,000 in

political contributions. Monsanto also spent $120 million

on advertising, to convince consumers that genetically

engineered foods are safe – despite the overwhelming

scientific evidence showing otherwise.

Let’s send them a message, loud and clear:

We have the right to know what they put into our food!

federal jury ruling on 4 December 2009 that

Bayer CropScience

LP must pay $2 million US dollars to two

Missouri farmers after their rice crop was

contaminated with

an experimental variety of rice that the

ompany was testing in 2006.

This verdict confirms that the responsibility

for the consequences of GE (genetic engineering)

contamination rests with the company

 that releases GE crops.

Bayer has admitted it has been unable to control

the spread of its genetically-

engineered organisms despite

‘the best practices [to stop contamination] ’(1).

 It shows that all outdoors field trials or

 commercial growing

of GE crops must be stopped before our crops

are irreversibly contaminated.

A report prepared for Greenpeace International

concluded that the total costs incurred

throughout the world

as a result of the contamination are estimated

to range from $741 million to $1.285 billion

The verdict indicates that Bayer is liable for

what could turn out to be a large proportion

of these costs, as it

awards damages in the first two of more than

1,000 currently pending lawsuits.

The decision must be used to

support all claims for losses incurred by other

US farmers whose crops have suffered from

genetically engineered foods. On April 19, 2012 the

Occupy Monsanto Genetic Crimes Unit will protest

outside of the Food Safety Summit at the Washington

Convention Center. Food safety activists will meet

at 11:00am at the Mount Vernon Square / 7th Street /

Convention Center Metro station (Yellow & Green

Line at the corner of M Street & 7th Street, NW)

and will call on FDA Commissioner Michael Taylor

to resign.

At 11:30am, former Monsanto executive,

“Food Safety Czar” Michael Taylor will be answering

questions at the Food Safety Summit

“Town Hall” forum. The GCU is calling for Taylor’s

immediate resignation because a former Monsanto lobbyist,

who profits from the increased use of pesticides &

genetically engineered foods, should not be determining

food safety & labeling standards in America.

The Town Hall, as the forum is being called, is NOT

open to the general public. Food Safety Summit attendees

have paid at least $350 to attend. Occupy Monsanto’s

99%ers will take to the sidewalks dressed in Genetic

Crimes Unit bio-hazmat uniforms to highlight the grave

ABOUT MICHAEL TAYLOR
For over 30 years, Michael Taylor has been a part of the

toxic revolving door between the public sector & the

private sector. Starting 1976, Taylor became a staff

attorney for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA),

where he was executive assistant to the Commissioner.

In 1981, he went into private practice at King & Spalding,

a law firm representing chemical company Monsanto,

where he established and led the firm’s “food and drug law”

practice. A decade later, on July 17, 1991, Taylor left King

& Spalding, returning to the FDA to fill the newly created

post of Deputy Commissioner for Policy. While at the FDA,

he also oversaw the policy regarding Monsanto’s genetically

engineered bovine growth hormone (rbGH/rbST), which is

injected into cows to increase milk production.

Taylor asserted that milk from injected cows did not require

any special labeling and wrote the white paper suggesting

that if companies have the audacity to label their products

as not using rbGH, they should also include a disclaimer

stating that, according to the FDA, there is no difference

between milk from treated and untreated cows.

Between 1994 and 1996 he moved to the United States

Department of Agriculture (USDA), where he was

Administrator of the Food Safety & Inspection Service

and was influential in the approval of unlabeled genetically

modified foods entering the American food supply.

After briefly returning to King & Spalding, he then returned

to Monsanto to become Vice President for Public Policy

from 1998 to 2001. Taylor has been a professor at the

University of Maryland’s School of Medicine and in 2007

he became a Research Professor of Health Policy at the

George Washington University School of Public Health and

Health Services. On July 7, 2009, Taylor once again

returned to government as “senior advisor” to the FDA

Commissioner and on January 13, 2010, he was appointed

to another newly created post at the FDA, this time as

Myself & a number of other folks were raging on this

about a month ago,

trying to get folks to protest

the S510 bill, there are a whole bunch of groups up in

arms over all this stuff.

i was all over FB about it for a while,

as were a lot of other folks. When there started to be a big

push back against S510, Cogress pinned

it to the Govt

financing re-authorization bill to get it through.
