The Visionary Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web.

Aaron is dead.

Wanderers in this crazy world,

we have lost a mentor, a wise elder.

Hackers for right, we are one down,

we have lost one of our own.

Nurturers, carers, listeners,

we have lost a child.

Let us all weep.

The Internet’s Own Boy:

The Story of Aaron Swartz

Published on Jun 29, 2014

The film follows the story of programming prodigy and information activist Aaron Swartz.

From Swartz’s help in the development of the basic internet protocol RSS to his co-founding of Reddit, his fingerprints are all over the internet.

But it was Swartz’s groundbreaking work in social justice and political organizing combined with his aggressive approach to information access that ensnared him in a two-year legal nightmare.

It was a battle that ended with the taking of his own life at the age of 26. Aaron’s story touched a nerve with people far beyond the online communities in which he was a celebrity.

This film is a personal story about what we lose when we are tone deaf about technology and its relationship to our civil liberties.

In Memory Of Aaron Swartz (Nov 8, 1986 — Jan 11, 2013)

Published on Jan 15, 2013

Aaron H. Swartz was an internet pioneer, activist, computer programmer, writer, archivist, political organizer, and internationalist. On the morning of January 11, 2013, Swartz was found dead in his apartment in New York City. He was 26 years old.

Aaron fought for freedom of the internet. He argued that access to the internet was a human rights and fulfillment of the U.S. first amendment right.

In his numerous technological and political endeavor, he was also an internationalist understanding the responsibility of programmers in making the world a better place and not causing harm to the earth.

Aaron was approached to visit the Congo and do computer programming workshops in the Congo, which he agreed on doing.

We mourn his loss and stand with his family in this time of sorrow. May his soul rest in peace.

One year ago this month, the young Internet freedom activist and groundbreaking programmer Aaron Swartz took his own life.

Swartz died shortly before he was set to go to trial for downloading millions of academic articles from servers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology based on the belief that the articles should be freely available online.

At the time he committed suicide, Swartz was facing 35 years in prison, a penalty supporters called excessively harsh.

Today we spend the hour looking at the new documentary, “The Internet’s Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz.”

We play excerpts of the film and speak with Swartz’s father Robert, his brother Noah, his lawyer Elliot Peters, and filmmaker Brian Knappenberger.

Guerilla Open Access Manifesto – A Tribute to Aaron Swartz

Guerilla Open Access Manifesto

Information is power. But like all power, there are those who want to keep it for
themselves. The world’s entire scientific and cultural heritage, published over centuries
in books and journals, is increasingly being digitized and locked up by a handful of
private corporations. Want to read the papers featuring the most famous results of the
sciences? You’ll need to send enormous amounts to publishers like Reed Elsevier.

There are those struggling to change this. The Open Access Movement has fought
valiantly to ensure that scientists do not sign their copyrights away but instead ensure
their work is published on the Internet, under terms that allow anyone to access it. But
even under the best scenarios, their work will only apply to things published in the future.
Everything up until now will have been lost.

That is too high a price to pay. Forcing academics to pay money to read the work of their
colleagues? Scanning entire libraries but only allowing the folks at Google to read them?
Providing scientific articles to those at elite universities in the First World, but not to
children in the Global South? It’s outrageous and unacceptable.

“I agree,” many say, “but what can we do? The companies hold the copyrights, they
make enormous amounts of money by charging for access, and it’s perfectly legal —
there’s nothing we can do to stop them.” But there is something we can, something that’s
already being done: we can fight back.

Those with access to these resources — students, librarians, scientists — you have been
given a privilege. You get to feed at this banquet of knowledge while the rest of the world
is locked out. But you need not — indeed, morally, you cannot — keep this privilege for
yourselves. You have a duty to share it with the world. And you have: trading passwords
with colleagues, filling download requests for friends.

Meanwhile, those who have been locked out are not standing idly by. You have been
sneaking through holes and climbing over fences, liberating the information locked up by
the publishers and sharing them with your friends.

But all of this action goes on in the dark, hidden underground. It’s called stealing or
piracy, as if sharing a wealth of knowledge were the moral equivalent of plundering a
ship and murdering its crew. But sharing isn’t immoral — it’s a moral imperative. Only
those blinded by greed would refuse to let a friend make a copy.

Large corporations, of course, are blinded by greed. The laws under which they operate
require it — their shareholders would revolt at anything less. And the politicians they
have bought off back them, passing laws giving them the exclusive power to decide who
can make copies.

There is no justice in following unjust laws. It’s time to come into the light and, in the
grand tradition of civil disobedience, declare our opposition to this private theft of public

We need to take information, wherever it is stored, make our copies and share them with
the world. We need to take stuff that’s out of copyright and add it to the archive. We need
to buy secret databases and put them on the Web. We need to download scientific
journals and upload them to file sharing networks. We need to fight for Guerilla Open

With enough of us, around the world, we’ll not just send a strong message opposing the
privatization of knowledge — we’ll make it a thing of the past. Will you join us?

DemocracyNow.org – Today we remember the pioneering computer programmer and cyberactivist Aaron Swartz, who took his own life Friday at the age of 26.

As a teenager, Swartz helped develop RSS, revolutionizing how people use the internet, going on to co-own Reddit, now one of the world’s most popular sites.

He was also a key architect of Creative Commons and an organizer of the grassroots movement to defeat the controversial House internet censorship bill, The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), and the Senate bill, The PROTECT IP Act (PIPA).

Aaron Swartz: How We Stopped SOPA

Published on Aug 17, 2012

Aaron H. Swartz (November 8, 1986 — January 11, 2013) speaking at ThoughtWorks August 16, 2012, tells how a tiny number of online activists managed to defeat SOPA, the Internet censoring bill, pushed by the entertainment industry, which had spent hundreds of millions of dollars per year trying to get it passed.

Aaron Swartz, 26, was found dead Jan 11, 2013 in his New York apartment, an apparent suicide. He had apparently hanged himself. Swartz’s girlfriend discovered the body.

Aaron Swartz became an Internet folk hero, pushing to make many Web files free and open to the public.

But in July 2011, he was indicted on federal charges of gaining illegal access to JSTOR, a subscription-only service for distributing scientific and literary journals, and downloading 4.8 million articles and documents, nearly the entire library.

Charges in the case, including wire fraud and computer fraud, were pending at the time of Mr. Swartz’s death, carrying potential penalties of up to 35 years in prison and $1 million in fines.

Lawrence Lessig of the Safra Center at Harvard who worked for a time on behalf of Swartz’s legal defense denounced the federal bullying: Why was it so necessary Aaron Swartz be labeled a felon? Legally, a felony requires an evil heart!

Aaron Swartz: The First Martyr of the Free Information Movement

Published on Jan 19, 2013

Lawrence Liang from the Alternative Law Forum discusses with NewsClick the tragic loss of Aaron Swartz. Liang underlines Aaron was a victim of a system in which privatisation of knowledge is the norm and its transgression as an act of resistance, as an act of self exploration has always been met by harsh punishment.

Aaron was actively involved and committed to the idea of free knowledge. He was working out ways of democratising access to information, to technology which has incredible consequences for science, for knowledge as such.

Liang sees Aaron’s act of downloading 4 million articles from JSTOR, intending to make them public, as a stupendous act of generosity. Aaron’s death is linked to the war against freedom of information that the US government has launched.

Was Aaron Swartz Murdered? Internet Freedom Fighter – Liberator of Knowledge – Enemy of State

Published on Jan 28, 2013

Aaron H. Swartz (November 8, 1986 — January 11, 2013) was an American computer programmer, writer, political organizer, and Internet activist.

Swartz was involved in the development of the web feed format RSS, the website framework web.py, and the social news site Reddit, in which he was an equal partner after a merger with his Infogami company.

Swartz also focused on sociology, civic awareness and activism. In 2010 he became a research fellow at Harvard University’s Safra Center for Ethics, directed by Lawrence Lessig.

He founded the online group Demand Progress, known for its campaign against the Stop Online Piracy Act, and later worked with the activist groups Rootstrikers and Avaaz. He also was a contributing editor to The Baffler.

On January 6, 2011, Swartz was arrested by federal authorities in connection with systematic downloading of academic journal articles from JSTOR. Swartz opposed JSTOR’s practice of compensating publishers, rather than authors, out of the fees it charges for access to articles.

Swartz contended that JSTOR’s fees were limiting public access to academic work that was being supported by public funding.

On January 11, 2013, Swartz was found dead in his Crown Heights, Brooklyn apartment where he had hanged himself. (from Wiki)

CIA responsible for Swartz murder; DID AARON SWARTZ HANG HIMSELF WEEKS BEFORE TRIAL Gordon Duff

Published on Jan 20, 2013

An intelligence analyst tells Press TV that rogue elements within the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) are responsible for the assassination of American dissident Aaron Swartz.

He also added that the US mainstream media has also turned a blind eye to the issue. US internet activist Aaron Swartz, who was an outspoken critic of US President Barack Obama’s policies was recently found hanged in his apartment.

The 26-year-old blogger and computer prodigy was found dead in his apartment in Brooklyn, New York City, on January 11.

Swartz died weeks before he was scheduled to face a trial on accusations of hacking a website and downloading millions of academic papers.

Brooklyn’s chief medical examiner ruled the death a ‘suicide by hanging,’ but no further details were available about the mysterious death.

Last year, Swartz openly criticized Washington and the Tel Aviv regime for launching joint cyber attacks against Iran.

He was also critical of Obama’s “kill list,” a list of individuals who are suspected of terrorism by the US and are listed for targeted killing after final approval by the US president himself.

Press TV has conducted an interview with Gordon Duff, senior editor of Veterans Today (Ohio) to have his opinion about the issue of Swartz’s death.

Reddit Co-Founder Aaron Swartz ‘Suicided’?

Published on Jan 14, 2013

Reddit co-founder and co-creator of RSS feed Aaron Swartz died two days ago at the age of 26. The official cause was suicide, but is there more to the story?

History shows us that dozens of activists and scientists whose deaths have been attributed to suicide have died under highly suspicious circumstances.

This includes Rik Clay, Andrew Breitbart, Hunter S Thompson, many other politicians and activists and about 100 scientists, especially microbiologists.

How Capitalism Killed Aaron Swartz

Capitalism killed Aaron Swartz: a system based on the exclusive control of information in the name of profit, ruthlessly enforced via copyright law in the name of big business, led to the relentless prosecution and ultimate suicide of the well-known internet activist and champion of net freedom.

The profit motive is based on monopoly control, and the denial of free access. Capitalism cannot tolerate the freedom of information.

Aaron Swartz death: Anonymous defaces MIT websites

Published on Jan 14, 2013

Hacktivist collective Anonymous has replaced two MIT websites with a statement urging reforms to US copyright law, after the death of Reddit co-founder Aaron Swartz.

The message from Anonymous called the government’s persecution of the 26 year old intern activist, “a gross miscarriage of justice”, adding ,”We call for this tragedy to be a basis for a renewed an unwavering commitment to a free and unfettered internet, spared from censorship with equality of access and franchise for all.” The sites have since been taken offline.

Mr Swartz, hanged himself in his Brooklyn apartment on Friday, weeks before he was due to face trial over allegations he illegally downloaded academic research papers from online resource JSTOR.

Despite JSTOR dropping the allegations, and Swartz having legal access to the publicly available material, he was facing up to 35 years in prison under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. His death came shortly after Assistant US Attorney Stephen Heymann denied further negotiation on his plea bargain.

A statement released by Swartz’s family following the suicide blamed both federal prosecutors and the MIT staff for being partially responsible for events leading to his death. In response MIT president L. Rafael Reif has said the institute will launch a “thorough analysis” of their involvement with Aaron Swartz’s case.

The miracle is happening – the new man is being created,
Our vision is manifesting. We will move on…
We will show the world that with you
the impossible happens every day !
Our whole effort is to show to the whole world
that there is no need of any war, no need of any fight,

no need of jealousy, no need of hate…

Life is so short and love is so precious !

And you can fill your life with love, with harmony, with joy,
you can make your life a poetry unto itself……
If you miss, only you are responsible for it, nobody else !

    It is only a question of understanding;

a simple insight is needed not to be dragged down

by the forces of darkness, negativity, destructiveness…

Just a little alertness is needed to devote oneself

to creativity, to love, to sensitivity, and to make

this small life just a series of songs…

that you dance in your life and that your death will be

your crescendo of dance; that you live totally

and you die totally with no complaint,

with gratitude, with thankfulness to existence…*

I don’t call the prayers that happen in synagogues and churches,
and temples and mosques, real prayer… !

The real prayer is only one, and that is
to live in such a way that you start
    feeling grateful towards existence,
that existence has given you such an opportunity –
which you had never asked for, which you never deserved.
And yet, you got it and you blossomed into thousands of flowers,
and you left the world with the fragrance of thankfulness.*
We can make life so precious that nobody is ready to fight…

The politicians can commit suicide with their own nuclear
weapons if they want, but humanity is no longer interested
in killing and being killed. And we are determined,
against all powerful forces…. We don’t have any power.

Love is our only power, silence is our only force..! *

But I say unto you that there is no power which is higher than love,
and there is no force which can defeat silence…
And it is through love and silence that one comes to know truth…
which is the ultimate victory of life…!

We are determined to spread the message
to all nooks and corners of the world,
to every intelligent person who can understand…
Except this, there is no other way to save this beautiful planet…

And this planet is the blessed planet, because all other planets –
and there are millions of planets in the universe –
are simply dead, not even grass grows there…
Only this small earth is so fortunate that all kinds of life exist !

In man it has become conscious and in a few men it has
become superconscious, and in every man it has the possibility
    of becoming superconsciousness—
that means attaining, arriving at the very essence of truth,
    of immortality, of eternity !*

We may not have a home, but we will go on wandering
like gypsies around the world… making the whole world our home!
